Guru James Miller
5 decades of martial training
A Life in the Martial Arts
For more than five decades, James Miller has walked the path of the martial arts — not as a hobbyist, but as a lifelong student of combat, culture, and lineage.

The Begining
His journey began at eight years old in a small-town Judo class. Like many of his generation, it was the image of Bruce Lee as Kato that first ignited the spark. Books were scarce. Authentic instruction was rare. But the hunger was real. James consumed everything he could find, training wherever opportunity appeared.
Shotokan Karate followed. Then Tae Kwon Do, where he earned his first black belt. Yet belts were never the destination. The deeper pursuit was understanding — to follow Bruce Lee’s philosophy of directness, efficiency, and personal expression.

Jeet Kune Do Concepts
That search led him to Guru Mike O’Melia and, through him, into Jeet Kune Do Concepts as preserved and transmitted by Tuhon Dan Inosanto — Bruce Lee’s closest friend and training partner. Under this lineage, James was immersed in the Inosanto/Lacoste system of Filipino Martial Arts, where blade, stick, and empty-hand systems blended into a complete combative structure.
He later trained under Sifu Paul Vunak, a Full Instructor under Tuhon Inosanto and the founder of Rapid Assault Tactics (RAT). Known for his uncompromising, street-oriented realism, Vunak’s influence further shaped James’ understanding of applied combat. Through this lineage, James absorbed principles that were battle-tested, pressure-proven, and forged for real-world survival.

Over time, James developed his own expression of the arts — Kune Tae Mu Do — synthesizing decades of cross-training while remaining rooted in authentic lineage. The Combat Arts Association recognized his contributions with the rank of Third Degree Black Belt. He also became a published contributor to Filipino Fighting Arts Magazine, helping preserve and communicate the technical depth of Filipino Martial Arts.
During recovery from a significant injury, James again returned to the role of student. He immersed himself in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu and, more profoundly, in Pekiti Tirsia Kali.
Meeting Grand Tuhon Jared Wihongi marked a defining chapter. Under Grand Tuhon Wihongi and alongside Tuhon Kit Acenas, James deepened his study of Pekiti Tirsia Kali’s edged-weapon methodology, tactical structure, and cultural roots. In the Philippines, he was awarded his 3rd Hagdan Guru certification under Grand Tuhon Wihongi — a recognition not only of skill, but of responsibility to the system.
Today, James teaches Pekiti Tirsia Kali, Jeet Kune Do Concepts, Rapid Assault Tactics, and TriCom Combatives for law enforcement and military personnel. His instruction reflects over fifty years of dedication — shaped by direct lineage, hardened through pressure, and guided by the belief that martial arts are not merely techniques, but also a way of life.
For James, the work is no longer about rank or recognition.
It is about preservation.
It is about transmission.
It is about legacy he passes on to his students and for his students to pass on to others
